Juan Nepomuceno Seguín was a major figure in Texas' independence, helping the Tejanos break from Mexico in the early 19th century. In fact, while Seguin was present for nearly the entire battle of the Alamo, he was away when the mission ultimately fell — having been chosen to carry the famous "Victory or Death" letter from William Barret Travis through enemy lines to Sam Houston, requesting reinforcements but vowing to never surrender in their fight for liberty.

But perhaps one of the most interesting things about Seguin was how he embraced his twofold nature: as a Mexican and a Tejano. Yes, he fought valiantly for a better, freer future for his family, but he remained proud of his heritage and stalwart in his identity.

Seguin, Texas proudly bears his name — only 30 miles from San Antonio and the Alamo. And the name remains a reminder than none of us are only one thing, but instead a blend of the influences, experiences and challenges that have led us to where we are today.
