The Martinville is made of handwoven raffia straw. The raffia straw lends structured flexibility to the hat, which makes this one of our most packable styles. The band is made of distressed nylon grosgrain with a subtle fold, and it features a thick, classy bow.

Behind the Name

Often, we talk about the road less traveled as an uphill, strenuous journey — cutting trail, forging rivers and fighting foes to discover new lands, develop muscles we didn't have or break away from the comforts and conventions that the masses have built to make the road easy-traveling, enjoyable and convenient.

And look — we don't disagree with any of that. We've certainly seen the fruits ourselves.

But does the road less traveled have to be difficult? Does it have to involve pain, sweat and risk to be considered uncommon, unconventional or brave?

We don't think so. Often, the road less traveled might mean kicking back, taking a break and disconnecting from the rat race.

For that reason, we named this hat after a small, laidback town in south central Louisiana named St. Martinville. It's the kind of place you take in not by running around, but by sitting — rocking, even — on a porch on a warm summer night. Cold drink. Fireflies. Laughing. Waving at neighbors.

Slow down from time to time. Stop running so damn fast, enjoy a deep breath and take in the world around you. In times like these, that might be the most rebellious thing you can do.

Poor quality control

The hat is stated to be a softer hat, and it is. Alsmot to the point of being floppy. The straw is splintering and began to unravel even before the first use. It also has a sheen to it that I'm not used to with rafia palm. The leather band on the inside is good and comfortable. I will say that I am pleases with the size and dimensions of the hat overall. This is the third hat I have purchased and it may very well be the last. Rather, it will most certainly be the last straw hat I purchase (shangtong withstanding).

Sorry to hear you weren't thrilled with the Martinville. The raffia palm is definitely a different finish than other straw materials, and this style in particular leans into the more loosely braided, light summer vibe. White band hat

I love the hat but the white band looks cheap. I have the same hat with the brown band and it is handsome. The white band shows the stitches and just doesn’t look as well made and polished.
Generally it’s a great hat for where I live in Palm Springs!
