This hat is woven by hand from genuine Shantung straw, which gives it a sturdy, substantial feel for straw. It's light, without giving you the impression that it's going to fall apart if it gets blown off the back of a motorcycle. A 1 3/8" nylon grosgrain ribbon is the perfect subtle addition to what is a very classic straw hat.

Behind the Name

Picture this.

Ernest Hemingway is sitting there on the patio of a little cantina in Havana, circa 1939. Wearing a fine handwoven straw Panama-style hat named after the very barrio in which he now sits, he's simply enjoying a tall, cold daiquiri and writing thoughtfully in a notebook when two drunken sailors amble by. One gestures to Hemmy and mumbles something to the effect of "Nice hat, gringo!" to his chum.

Hearing this, he sets down his fountain pen, carefully removes the Vedado from his head and stands up. Approaching the two without a word, he taps the larger of the two on the shoulder. When the fellow turns, he is greeted by a solid right cross on the chin, and crumples indistinguishably among the cobblestones. His partner receives the same treatment. Hemingway returns to his seat, replaces the hat atop his head and picks up the pen. The sun is going down and he'd like to get the rest of his thoughts down before the light escapes.

None of this actually happened, we assume. But it's what we envision when we see El Vedado.

Great hat, except…

Received the boxed hat, labeled fragile, without visible damage.
Upon opening, the hat looked to have been compressed potentially as the balance of the top creases was off significantly, to the point that I’m going to have to steam and attempt to reshape the top of the hat, of which I have zero experience doing. It’s concerning because the box looked well taken care of, but the contents inside say differently.
As far as fit, it is well and slightly larger than anticipated, should be able to overcome that with the size adjustment set provided with the hat.
The hat is very light, which is exactly what I was looking for with Derby days upon us.

Jerad — really sorry that this was the experience you had. Hats certainly need to be in tip-top shape when they leave our shop. There's only so much we can do to prevent box damage once it leaves, but in this case, it doesn't sound like that was even an element here. I am passing this along to our team so that they can review their process. I'm also going to pass it to our customer team and have them reach out and get pictures so that we can figure out what next steps can be. Ultimately we want a great hat on your head that you're excited to wear. It's on us to make sure that happens each time someone orders a hat from us.

Excellent hat; very light

Hat is a perfect summer hat. I will say that it is the lightest hat I have and almost feels delicate. It feels like it can be damaged very easily so I have been very cautious when wearing it. Company is great —good description of products, reasonable prices, appropriate shipping time.
